Waltz #2, Independence Day, and Oh Well, Okay appear from that record. It's a pretty standard solo acoustic set for the time - a few then-new(ish) songs, a good chunk from Either/Or, and some tunes from the self-titled album.

Like the majority of Elliott's foreign shows, there's little to no banter between tracks (not that there was tons in most shows in the U.S.), beyond "Wanna here a loud song or a quiet song?" - buying time to figure out exactly what to play. Sound quality of the minidisc recording is pretty good, not great. The performance itself is on par with others around the same time - Elliott's on top of his game here. Very few mistakes (a minor lyrical flub in Coming Up Roses, for example).

Setlist:
Angeles
Division Day
Clementine
Alameda
Waltz #2 (XO) mp3
Between the Bars
Pictures of Me mp3
Rose Parade
Coming Up Roses
Say Yes
Needle in the Hay
Thirteen (Big Star Cover)
The Biggest Lie
-encore:
Oh Well, Okay
Ballad of Big Nothing
Independence Day mp3
Speed Trials

and the whole show can be downloaded here at elliottsmithbootlegs.net.
-----------------------------------
In time, I'm hoping that in doing this I can take some time to enjoy individual shows that I've accumulated (and that are forcing me toward purchasing an external hard drive) and that we can all get a sense of the highs and lows of Elliott's all too short but Brobdingnagianly important career.

For the "Enough With The Elliott Already"ers:
I'm trying to branch out musically right now. (er...Monday, rather.)

Here it is, folks- My version of March Madness. In the coming month, I will start with the 65 painters I have chosen (from a list of 267... van Aelst to Zurbarán) and whittle away until we have just one painter left. More than anything, this is going to be an exercise in learning about my own tastes. You'll notice a lot of trends just based on whom I've chosen for the bracket. Not many 20th c. artists there... and some scandalous omissions. The process of picking just 65 was quite tough.

Anyway. My criteria for chosing these, and for deciding who will win? Wellllll, it's a little complicated. Sure, I want to take into account how important these guys (sorry, I know, no females represented here. It's not intentional.) are in the big picture (but not too much). Mostly, this is about my reactions to and interactions with paintings/art. So, yeah, it's kinda fuzzy, but we'll all just have to deal with that, won't we? Although I picked the artists based on my own tastes, I seeded them roughly how I think an average survey textbook might do it if it had to.

Who would you add? Who here is a surprise to you? Who do you think will win? Let's discuss.

Louvre Division
Play-In game: Abbot Handerson Thayer vs. Ralph Albert Blakelock

16) Play-In Winner
1) Leonardo da Vinci

9) Jan Steen
8) Edvard Munch

5) Sandro Botticelli
12) Hokusai

13) Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin
4) Diego Velázquez

3) Francisco Goya
14) Gustave Caillebotte

11) Pieter de Hooch
6) James Abbott McNeil Whistler

7) Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres
10) Théodore Géricault

15) Henry Fuseli
2) Johannes Vermeer

Uffizi Division
16) N.C. You are plural, aren't you?

Big news today. Well, it was old news, really. It's just official now. Kill Rock Stars made the announcement that New Moon, a collection of unreleased songs recorded from 1995-1997 by Elliott Smith will be released on May 8, 2007. Most of the 24 songs have been available in one way or another as demos or live tracks, but to have all of these songs in a "finished" state will be another incredible piece to Mr. Smith's oeuvre. I'm not going to get into the question of whether or not any or all of these were meant to be released. Almost all have been played live, and some of them appear to have been in consideration for From a Basement on the Hill [Elliott's intended double-disk release, not the 14-song plus one sound track posthumous collection that I'm happy we got], suggesting that Elliott might have had a crop of songs that he meant to use at some point... but anyway. A lot of them had been part of the "Basement II" leak a while back.

Let's take a look under the hood n' see what we're dealing with. Mp3s are either old demos or live tracks...

Disc 1
1. Angel in the Snow (used to be available on elliottsmithbsides.com, but was taken down by request). This song was released as part of a comp for Yeti Zine. This is a gorgeous, gorgeous song. I think it's one of the more straightforward love songs, if Elliott had any, and has this nice 6/8 time that drives along quietly. Wish I could find a good link for y'all to here. As far as I know, it was never played live. This is probably one of my 10 favorite Elliott Smith songs.
2. Talking to Mary. live. Probably written for/about Mary Lou Lord. A good song.
3.High Times. "I'm so sick and tired trying to change your mind/ when it's so easy to disconnect mine." This song builds up for the first 2 minutes to a nice climax, then backs down to finish with a bit of a whimper.
4.New Monkey. This is one of the songs of which I'm really interested to hear a more polished version. I'm not totally sold on it based on the demos. Lots of people are excited for this song, though.
5.Looking Over My Shoulder. demo. This one used to be known as "Sticks and Stones." "I got nothin' that I want to do/ more than make another sonic 'fuck you' to play."
6.Going Nowhere. I think "High Times", "Going Nowhere", and "New Disaster" (see below) make a beautiful, sad trio.
7.Riot Coming. live.
8.All Cleaned Out. Totally New. No version known.
9.First Timer. live. and This is a later version of the song, called "From a Poison Well" here.
10.Go By. live. Sorry the sound is so bad on that.
11.Miss Misery (Early Version). Maybe it's this piano version?
12.Thirteen. From "Lucky 3". Elliott covered this Big Star song a lot live. Another beautiful one, and a good one to end the first disc.

Disc 2.
1.Georgia Georgia. Another one that had demos available and was taken down. Not super into this one.
2.Whatever (Folk Song in C). live. Another sweet one.
3.Big Decision. Can't find a good live one of this... but i know there are couple out there. This one is more up-tempo. Not upbeat, but up-tempo. It's on a comp somewhere, i think.
4.Placeholder.
5.New Disaster. See note above.
6.Seen How Things are Hard. live.
7.Fear City. Not super into this one...
8.Either/Or.
9.Pretty Mary K (alternate version). I like this better than the song with the same title on "Figure 8".
10.Almost Over. Another without a good link...
11.See You Later. demo . A Very Good Heatmiser Song.
12.Half Right. Another Very Good Heatmiser Song, and a very good way to end the second disc.

Here's Elliott perfoming "See You Later" on the pilot for The Jon Brion Show:

Should be sweet. Let's hope Interscope/Dreamworks follows suit and we can finally here "finished" versions of "True Love", "See You in Heaven", "Dancing on the Highway", "Stickman", and "Blue Mood"......

xomatt

Stupid Hat Roundup!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MuGxcNICBT8/RdEfzXcWrGI/AAAAAAAAABM/D7f0e4p72RU/s320/jester.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5030837226076286050" />
I like to think of head apparrel as something that has both aesthetic and utilitarian purposes. Out of the limelight, she raises her son although she is desparate to return to stardom. She tries and fails, reaching an all-time low. Struggles for inheritance continue.

ACT IV
Turning things around, she works her way back into public view, still the source of curiosity and ridicule. Her main opponent in the inheritance case dies, bringing new hope. A lover enters the picture, and eventually a daughter. Suddenly her son dies.

ACT V
In a whirlwind, legal troubles mount. Her health and mental state begin to deteriorate, and another man stakes a claim to her daughter's paternity as her wedding to her lover is not binding. She is forced from her home because of financial problems. Under the pressure of everything, she dies, leaving behind a daughter, and two men jockeying for position for the inheritance that she never gained in life...

Seriously, though, how ridiculous is it that CNN.com was soliciting "photos, videos, and memories" from fans like Anna Nicole Smith was some national treasure... an historic figure? I mean, she gets the same treatment as Gerald Ford? Really?

Good night, sweet attention hound. And flights of trailers sing thee to they rest.

"All right, you wanna hear a stupid pop song I wrote in about a minute?"

That's a video from 1997 (?) (ish?) of an Elliott Smith show when someone asked him to sing "I Figured You Out," a song he wrote but ended up giving away to his friend Mary Lou Lord. It kinda does sound like the fuckin' Eagles. Who wants that? I don't. And The Dude certainly doesn't.

It's funny how things that come so easily are often the things that don't bring the most satisfaction. (Although, if you think about things in terms of amount of work required vs. amount of satisfaction gained...) I think most people have the curse where certain things are just so easy, and even though the results are good or maybe even great, there just isn't much to gain out of it.

Could I be a better friend?
Could I be a better fiancé?
Could I be a better paintings conservator?
Could I be a better poker player?
Could I be a better cook/baker?
Could I be a better screenwriter?
Could I be a better blogger?
A better person?
A better neighbor?
A better video game player?
Better organized?
More financially responsible?
In better shape?

And it goes on and on. Of course, the answer to all of these questions, simply, is yes. Would any of those things take much work? Nope. Something a little sad about that. How satisfied am I with just good enough? I want to be better than that, but being just good enough is so easy. Mediocracy and mediocrity are evil, evil things... I could always try harder - does that mean I never try enough? [And the waters get a little sludgy, though, when you add in social mores and expectations. Some people value physical shape and appearance over all. Some find video games a waste of time. Some find poker immoral... and some don't really care what other people think.]

But anyway. Onward to less philosophical matters.

7 Good Things, 6 February 2007 (in some order, but I'm not quite sure what)
1. alluc.org. Go watch episodes of Mythbusters. I kind of have a crush on Kari Byron. Shh. Don't tell Karla.
2. I have a job lined up for the next two years, starting in September. Craziness. I will be living in the Berkshires, where I will enjoy falling on my ass whilst trying to learn how to snowboard. If all else fails, I can go tubing and drink hot chocolate.
3. Gotta admit, I kinda like Jenny Lewis. I'm not turning this into a music blog. I'm just not hip enough and not quick enough - what drives the whole music blog thing is finding The New Cool Obscure Thing before anyone else. And what do you know, five minutes later, it's not obscure anymore. So on to The Next New Cool Obscure Thing. We are gluttons for cool with ADHD and loyalty issues. Anyway. I like Jenny. I might write her a part in a movie and name her character Jenny Lewis.
4. Watched Donzoko this past weekend. It's Kurosawa's 1957 adaptation of Gorky's Lower Depths. It's a real slow burn - if you look at Jean Renoir's 1936 adaptation, the beginning scenes are about 45 minutes into Kurosawa's. It all ramps up to the last 5 minutes where everything kind of explodes into what is essentially drunken beatboxing (remember - 1957, Japan. OK.) and then an abrupt ending that kind of sums everything up, in a minimal, existential sort of way.
5. During a recent trip for work, I stayed in a room on the 14th floor of a hotel. That's hotel for 13th floor. They don't use 13 because of superstition. The entire time I was there, I kept thinking about Mitch Hedberg: "Hey, what room are you staying in? 1401. No you're not - jump out the window, you will die earlier."
6. I will soon have been on this planet for a quarter of a century.
7. Gametime is coming soon.

xomatt

spilling beans, guts, and crying over milk.

Wow. It's been quite awhile. This is what happens: I always want to post, I really do, and I have good ideas to focus on, and then I go to blog, and I'm just not feeling it. What is below is quite scattershot as a result.

[Why is it "blog" and not some other portion of "weblog". Weblo is kind of taken - it's too close to Webelo. If younger boy scouts are Webelos, why are younger girl scouts Brownies and not Shebelos? ...Yeah, you're right, that doesn't sound good. Nix that.]

Anyway. Quite a bit has happened since last post. First off, I'm engaged now, to my lovely and darling K. I'll spare the whole proposal story, since it will make some people vomit, but suffice it to say, it was cute and creative, I think. Somebody recently told me that I'm an exceptional person and that she's lucky. I argued and said that I'm not exceptional, but if I am, it's because K makes me that way. You can now proceed to gag yourself, I know. But it's true.

Things you might not know about me:
1. If I'm not feeling right, I sometimes imagine myself as other people whom I think are normal and confident. It's weird and I don't know if other people do that. But I think there's a name for that behavior. It works, though.
2. I am writing screenplays. Plural. No, I can't tell you what they're about. Yes, I might be able to let you read them when I feel like they're done. One is about 70% done, I'd guess. The other two are in the beginning stages. One of those I've decided to co-write with my best friend Ryan. But he's going to Kenya again soon, so, y'know, who knows.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MuGxcNICBT8/Ra8NA1mEB5I/AAAAAAAAAAM/jTO7Su45aas/s320/dick.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5021246417579280274" />
That's an old, funny picture of Ryan. Check out the bolo tie.

3. I sleep with my socks on. No, my feet don't smell as a result. The odd part of that is that I hate it if I get too warm. But the socks stay on.
4. I am starting to like watching crime shows on CourtTV where they show interrogation footage of the people who are guilty, because you can see how liars act.

I am kind of at a crossroads professionally, I guess. I love what I do. And I knew going into this that it's not a field where you're raking in huge paychecks. But it is incredibly frustrating to know that my bachelor's degree in chemistry could net me a lab technician job where I'd be making more than I will be once I graduate with my master's. In fact, I've thought of several things that I could be doing right now, no master's, that would be more lucrative. Not that it's all about money. It isn't. It's about knowing that you're going to be comfortable.

So, dear reader, in what direction should this blog go? What do you want to hear about? Movies? (A movie a day?) TV? Work? Poker? Random shit? Music? Please, tell me. Otherwise, I'm just going to babble.

There's a rock in my shoe.

I have to admit that I'm just not that excited about TV these days. When I was younger, there were always a few shows that I would watch religiously. But now... there really isn't anything on that I need to watch. Family Guy might have been the closest to reaching that point, but the new episodes just aren't doing it for me. It's quickly reaching the same dead end that The Simpsons hit years ago. That show just will not die. It's the monster in a shitty horror movie that keeps coming back. Your crazy uncle that's had 7 heart attacks, 5 strokes, kidney stones, anemia, broken hips, and a prostate the size of a dirigible. Someone, pull the plug, it's getting embarrassing. I guess we'll just have to hide it in the basement...

My favorite TV show of all time is undoubtedly Mystery Science Theater 3000. For the uninitiated, MST3K boils down to this: a guy is trapped in space with some robots, and a mad scientist forces them to watch really crappy movies. To make it through, the guy and the robots make fun of the movies. The movies are downright bad. Some repulsive. Some so stupid it seems likely that a 4-year-old was at the helm. So how does a two hour show of people making fun of shitty movies last 10 seasons? It's fucking funny, that's how.

There are literally hundreds of jokes each episode. Yeah, some jokes are duds, but that's to be expected. But at least it's not the same thing over and over again. [Side note: I came home from work today and had to sit through an episode of Will and Grace. A 30-minute gay joke. OK, I get it. Funnyfunny. Why 30 minutes? Why would there need to be more than one episode? Why more than one season? For the character development? Why? Couldn't it just be a 5-minute SNL sketch? Wouldn't that work better? How can anybody find that show funny over the course of one episode, let alone week after week?] The writing on MST3K was smart, and it was layered like a delicious torte - soft creamy goodness between spongey and crunchy, preferably chocolate. There's toilet humor, dick and fart jokes, pop culture references, cultural references (there's a difference), biting observations - and you know what? It's a show that grandparents, parents, and kids could probably all watch together and be entertained on different but equal levels. Fucking brilliant.

Sadly, MST3K got canned in 1999, and disappeared from TV all together in early 2004. Will it ever be back? Even in the current climate of digital cable and more channels than anyone could possibly need, I doubt it. You'd be hard-pressed to find a channel willing to devote 2 hours of its timeslots to "a puppet show making fun of movies." Our attention spans are just too short. Yet, Comedy Central airs something to the tune of 18 hours of MadTV each week. This does not compute.

Quick, order up 14 new series exactly like the thing we just cancelled last month! Let's make a show that's ever so slightly different than the hot show right now! What's say we cross "Groundhog Day" with "24"... brilliant!

Take 4 minutes of your time, and watch this clip. They're watching Space Mutiny. This movie sucks on toast.

It's not the best clip on YouTube, but it's relatively short and pretty good, in my opinion.

-------------
Quick notes:
1. I hate it when I read or hear a speech that President Bush gave and he uses a word that I don't know. I can't tell you how stupid that makes me feel.
2. I felt like shit today, and then when I got home, I realized that there was a rock in my shoe. David Cross was right.
3. True Love is a gorgeous, gorgeous, heartbreakingly good song. More on this later. This year's game, said to be more blistering than the last... Oh look, there! There she is! The winner's a girl! Surviving a fierce battle that raged 2 days, 7 hours and 43 minutes... the winner is a girl! Look, she's smiling! Smiling! The girl definitely just smiled!

So opens Kenji Fukasaku's 2000 Battle Royale, after the novel by Koushun Takami. Now, I'm definitely not an expert on the film - I've only seen it 2.5 times, and I haven't really pored over every detail. Basic premise goes like this (without giving too much away): Highschool class of (typically) ingrateful students is forced into a wickedly twisted game where they placed on an island where they must kill each other until only one remains. Each student is given an item or weapon toward that means. Lots of twists to this: there's a time limit, sections of the island become danger zones where, if anyone lingers too long, they'll die, etc. etc... Although this movie can turn stomachs and has some cringe factor to it, it's not all shock. There's a lot of meat here in terms of social commentary, teenage psychology and the teenage/highschool social behavior, groupthink and the human cattle condition, blahblah. I think the violence is used beautifully here to not only drive the action of the film but also to force the viewer to consider something along the lines of "ok, so what's here beyond the violence?"

I'm a strong proponent of the idea that violence can be used to tell a story with just as much emotional impact and symbolic significance (as well as serve all of the "technical movie things" and storytelling things like character development, cinematography, choreography, etc.) of a song in a musical or a one-liner in a comedy. Or a gratuitous topless shot in a cookie-cutter teenage comedy. Not necessarily condoning violence, but saying that it has a right to be used. RIP Robert Altman, and godspeed, but you were wrong about this, dude.

The pacing of the movie is decent - it's not your average ADD action movie, nor is it some yawn of an arthouse flick - and there are some parts that are downright hilarious. Keep an eye out for Chiaki Kuriyama (aka Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill.

Anyway. I'd love to go into this more, but I don't want to ruin anything. Do check it out. There's a sequel, which I haven't seen yet and have heard is inferior to the original. AND there's an American remake planned for 2008. ick. I won't be surprised if it's reduced to all shock. I pray it's not. BR would make for a pretty sweet multiplayer videogame, I think...

---------------------
A quick note about Man Vs. Wild on the Discovery Channel. This is on my current list of favorite TV shows. There's surprisingly little on TV that I'm excited about, but MVW kicks some mayjoor bootay. Show goes like so: Dude [Bear Grylls, former UK Special Forces] is airdropped into an inhospitable environment with little to no provisions, and he has to make it back to civilization. Dude tells you what you need to do to survive. Dude shows you what to eat, how to prepare it. How to keep warm, how to keep cool. How to build shelter. But Dude also tells you WHY. All the while, Dude relates stories about people in similar situations, and what they did right or wrong.

You get the idea. But yeah, amazing stuff. I don't think I could climb a canyon wall to harvest bird eggs (and eat them raw or fry them on a rock) if I had to. Granted, I fucking hate eggs.

Here's a clip of Bear in the Moab Desert of Utah, showing you how to keep cool in the 120 degree heat:

This week, Bear goes to the European Alps. Friday, 9PM, Discovery. Check yo' local listings, fool.

------
Lastly, I'll leave you with a bit of aural goodness. Here's a live version of one of my favorite songs, Rose Parade by Elliott Smith. From a 1998 set at the Black Cat in Washington, D.C.
We'll talk about Elliott more later. Much more.

Gnight.
xomatt

Oh yeah, PS: any music I ever link to here will be stuff that's freely available online; i.e. it will always be stuff that you could download from, say, a record label or band's official site for free. no copyright warnings here. word up.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://confidenceartist.blogspot.com/2006/11/batoru-rowairu-man-vs-wild-and-rose.html' title='Batoru Rowairu, Man Vs.
